How to install Momo Whisper

New to installing apps outside the App Store? No problem. Follow these six steps once and you'll be dictating in a couple of minutes.

1

Download and unzip

Click Download (right here, or the button top right — it always gives you the newest version). Your browser saves a .zip file to your Downloads folder. Double-click that file to unzip it, and you'll get an app called Momo Whisper.

For Mac · macOS 13+

Why a zip? It keeps the app in one tidy package so it downloads quickly and arrives intact.

2

Move it into Applications

Drag Momo Whisper into your Applications folder. Not sure where that is? Open a Finder window (the blue smiley face in your Dock) and you'll see Applications in the sidebar on the left.

Why here? Applications is where your Mac keeps all its apps and expects to find them, so everything runs smoothly.

3

Open it the first time

The first time you open Momo Whisper, macOS shows a warning like “Apple could not verify Momo Whisper is free of malware.” Don't worry, nothing is wrong. macOS says this about every free indie app that hasn't paid Apple's notarization fee. You only need to get past it once. Pick whichever way feels comfortable:

Option A · easiest, no typing
  1. In your Applications folder, right-click (or Control-click) Momo Whisper and choose Open.
  2. The warning appears again, but now with an Open button. Click Open.
  3. Don't see an Open button? Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to “Momo Whisper was blocked”, click Open Anyway, then enter your Mac password.
Option B · one Terminal command

Prefer a single command? Open Terminal (in Applications → Utilities), paste this, and press Return:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Momo Whisper.app"

It just removes the “downloaded from the internet” quarantine flag, nothing more.

This is a one-time step. After it opens once, Momo Whisper launches normally forever after.
4

Allow a few permissions

On first launch, Momo Whisper walks you through a few macOS permissions. Here's what each one is for:

  • Microphone, so it can hear you when you dictate.
  • Accessibility, so it can type the finished text into whatever app you're in.
  • Speech Recognition (required), on-device transcription that also powers Local mode before you add a key; that audio stays on your Mac.

You can review or change these anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

5

Add your free Groq key (optional)

Momo uses Groq to turn your speech into text and to translate it. A Groq API key is optional (without one, Momo works in on-device Local mode), but it gives better accuracy and is needed for translation. It's like a free password that lets the app talk to Groq on your behalf.

It's free: create one at console.groq.com, copy it, and paste it into Momo's Settings. Your key is stored locally on your Mac, and Groq's free tier is generous for everyday dictation.

6

Start talking to your Mac

That's it! Hold Fn and speak to dictate, hold Fn⇧ to translate as you speak, or highlight any text and click the translate button. The menu-bar icon shows a live waveform while it listens.

Optional · for MCP users

Connect your AI (MCP)

Works with Claude Desktop (one click) and any MCP app — Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI. Point it at Momo and ask: “Look at my last 50 dictations and fix the words Momo keeps mishearing.” It reads your history, adds the fixes, and you approve.

Claude Desktop — one click

Download the connector and Claude Desktop installs it for you. No config file to edit.

Add to Claude Desktop

Double-click the file, then Install. Needs Momo installed.

Any other AI app that supports local MCP

Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI and more. Momo ships a tiny MCP server inside the app. Add it once, in the AI app you use, with these two values. No arguments, no keys.

Needs Momo installed on this Mac. The connector ships inside the app, so finish the six steps above first.

Server name
momo-whisper

Command (no arguments)

/Applications/Momo Whisper.app/Contents/MacOS/momo-mcp
Most apps use this JSON format

Cursor, Gemini CLI, Windsurf and most others: paste this into the app's MCP config file, then restart the app. (Claude Desktop's config file takes it too, if you'd rather not use the one-click file.)

Works with apps that support local (stdio) MCP servers. The ChatGPT and Gemini web and desktop apps don't yet.

Then just ask

Talk to your AI like you normally do. Momo's history and dictionary are simply there for it to use.

Claude Code · slash commands

Momo adds four commands, ready to run. Tip: type /mcp to see them.

  • /mcp__momo-whisper__fix-my-words — finds what Momo keeps mishearing and proposes fixes.
  • /mcp__momo-whisper__learn-my-names — picks out names and terms you say often, adds them to the vocabulary.
  • /mcp__momo-whisper__review-dictionary — checks your dictionary for duplicates or risky entries.
  • /mcp__momo-whisper__send-feedback — drafts a note to us; it's sent only after you approve.
Any other app · paste a prompt
Check my Momo history from the last 3 days and fix the words it keeps mishearing — show me the list first.
Find names and terms I say often in my Momo history and add them to Momo's vocabulary — ask me first.
Review my Momo dictionary for duplicates or risky entries and suggest fixes — don't change anything until I approve.
Tips for good fixes
  • Only fix a mistake that keeps repeating — skip a one-off typo.
  • If the misheard word is a real word on its own (Thai or English), don't map that single word — it would rewrite it everywhere else too. Use the short phrase as it was heard instead, e.g. "หลอกหลังบ้าน → log หลังบ้าน", not "หลอก → log".
  • Give it the exact spelling you want — "log", "Figma", "Claude Code" — not lowercase or reworded.
  • No one consistent wrong form? Ask it to add the name as a word to listen for instead of a correction.
  • Momo already checks its own dictionary first, so it won't propose something you already have.
Your AI always shows the changes first. Nothing is saved until you approve.

What your AI can and can't do

It gets a small, fixed set of tools. Nothing more.

It can
  • Read your dictation history and your dictionary.
  • Add corrections and words to listen for. They show as “Added by your AI” in Settings → Dictionary, where you can remove any of them.
  • Remove its own entries. Your own entries only go after you click Remove in the dialog Momo shows you.
  • Send feedback to us — only after you approve it.
It can't
  • Change the app, your settings, prompts or keys.
  • Run commands or touch other files.
  • Reach the internet — except sending feedback you approve.
Runs on your Mac only. The only thing it can send is feedback you approve, straight to our inbox. What your AI reads goes to that AI's provider, like any chat.

Download, paste a free Groq key, hold Fn. You're dictating in under a minute.
