Download Momo Whisper, unzip, and drag it into your Applications folder. New to installing apps outside the App Store? Follow the full step-by-step install guide.
Not quite — it's in public beta. It's free and works well today, but things may still change as it improves. Your feedback directly shapes what gets fixed and built next.
Expected on any app that isn't paid-notarized. Do this once and it opens normally forever after:
- Double-click the app, then click Done on the warning.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to "Momo Whisper was blocked…" and click Open Anyway.
Or in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Momo Whisper.app"
Microphone so it can hear you dictate, and Accessibility so it can type the result into other apps.
Speech Recognition is required too: it powers on-device transcription (and Local mode before you add a key), and that audio stays on your Mac.
No. Without a key, Momo works in on-device Local mode (Apple Speech Recognition plus local cleanup). A free Groq key gives better accuracy and unlocks translation: get it at console.groq.com and paste it into Settings (or set GROQ_API_KEY in ~/.zshrc). Groq's free tier is generous for daily dictation.
If you add a key, it's stored on your Mac. To transcribe and translate with it, your audio and text are sent to the AI service you connect (Groq with your own free key) — never to us, never sold, and we never see what you say. Without a key, Local mode keeps everything on your Mac. Momo can also read the text box you're typing in, only on your Mac and with no AI, for two things: to learn a word you fix right after dictating (it stops when you leave the box or after 3 minutes, never touches password fields, and you can turn it off in Settings → Privacy → "Learn from my fixes"), and for "Fix wrong keyboard", which converts the text you select when you tap right Option. Nothing from this is sent anywhere. The app sends one anonymous launch/update count (no speech, no text; you can turn it off in Settings). No Electron.
Only if you connect it yourself via MCP. It reads Momo's history on your Mac and goes only to the AI you chose — never to us. How to connect your AI.
Yes. Momo Whisper is free to use, built on the open-source WhisperApp by Gamezxz (MIT). A Groq key is optional.
Yes, Thai is what it was built for. Dictate in Thai, or hold Fn+Shift to speak Thai and get English typed out (or the other way round). Six tones cover Thai and English, and the custom dictionary handles Thai names and nicknames. It also works with Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and 10 more, 16 languages in all.
Hold Fn+Shift and talk. When you release, Momo Whisper types your words already translated into the language you picked, right where your cursor is. For text that's already on screen, highlight it and click the floating button to translate it in place.
They're all Mac dictation apps. Momo Whisper is a small, free one focused on translation: speak in one language and type another, highlight-to-translate in any app, and tones for Thai and English. It runs on your own free Groq key.
Start talking to your Mac.
Download, hold Fn (add a free Groq key for best accuracy). You're dictating in under a minute.
